Singing House Wren

Welcome to NatureBits

Dedicated to the understanding and enjoyment of natural sounds.

Hello. I developed NatureBits to share the nature recordings I have made over the past several years. At this time I have posted over 300 sounds made by more than 150 species. Most of the recordings are of birds found in eastern North America, but some are from Africa and Asia, and I also have posted the sounds of a few mammals, amphibians and insects. The sounds in a few recordings may not be available commercially or may be difficult to find (e.g. beautiful nuthatch and the unusual mating display call of Hartlaub's bustard).

Whenever possible I have described how an animal typically uses the sound that I recorded or else what the animal was doing when I recorded the sound. In many cases I have presented a number of variations of the song by the same bird or by different birds to give some idea of the variability of the songs.

All of the recordings are in mp3 format. I have used a relatively small amount of compression to maintain high quality sound. Most of the recordings are taken from much longer recordings; the originals are available uncompressed. If you download anything please read my Copyright Notice to learn the limitations on using the material without a license.

NatureBits is a work in progress. I will be adding new sounds as I get them, and I also will be adding new information on how birds or animals communicate. Drop me a line if you have thoughts or experiences to share -- or if you have found any inaccuracies in NatureBits.

I hope you find NatureBits interesting and enjoyable.
